MBALE U-16 girls’ football team made Uganda proud after edging Kenya’s Mathare 4-2 to lift the East Africa Cup in Moshi, Tanzania on Saturday.

The hard fought victory came after a penalty shoot-out after both sides drew goalless in regular time at Jamuhuri stadium.

The champions had goalkeeper Juliet Adeke to thank for making crucial saves against the physically superior Kenyans.

Despite dominating possession in a one-sided first half, Mathare saw their hopes of retaining the title fade as they blasted their first penalty kick wide. And Adeke proved the saviour for Uganda with her second save in the match watched by a mammoth crowd.

Mbale, who beat hosts Moshi Local 3-0 in the semi-finals, never looked back as Lydia Namono, Yudaya Nakayenze, Lydia Mutezi and Sharon Wesagali converted their spot kicks.

It was the third victory for Uganda in the regional event. Coach Paul Nkata guided Heart United for Uganda’s first victory in 2004 before Arua U-14 boys triumphed in 2009.

Uganda’s other hopes for a title were dashed as Mbale U-13, Kampala and Kabale sitting volleyball teams lost in the final.
