SC Villa founding secretary Edward Luyimbazzi Mugalu died yesterday. There will be a requiem mass at Christ the King Church in Kampala today before burial in Kyetume, Mukono later in the day.

Mugalu, an icon of Villa successes that include 14 league titles and nine Cups, succumbed to kidney failure at Kampala Hospital, Kololo.

Sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi led condolences.

The minister said; “It is really shocking news, I didn’t know about his illness. It is sad that we have lost one of the foundations of Villa and one of the pillars of Ugandan football.”

Club directors Muwema, Ahmed Omar Mandela and Franco Mugabe yesterday said Villa will meet all burial expenses including burial arrangements.

Mugalu was part of the team that formed Nakivubo Boys after Express was banned in 1979 by then Central Province Governor Col. Abdalla Nasur.

They renamed the club Nakivubo Villa and later Sports Club Villa with Jogoo (Cock) as their symbol. He has since been the behind-the-scenes workhorse at the club.

Mugalu, 65, is survived by six children – four boys and two girls.

“His work is measurable. Last season when Villa players went on strike, Mugalu worked tireless to ensure the club had enough playing staff so ensured Villa did honour all their matches,” said club chairman Muwema.
