MOBILE phones are adding to the high rate of marriage break-ups today, the Rev. Abel Sserwanja of Namirembe Diocese has said.

“Twenty percent of misunderstandings among couples are caused by their spouses’ mobile phones,” Sserwanja said.

He made the disclosure at the fathers’ and mothers’ get-together and thanksgiving service at St. Paul Cathedral Kako in Masaka on Sunday.

The function was organised by West Buganda Diocese

Sserwanja said lies and adulterous phone calls had ruined many families.

“A mobile phone should not be kept discretely. Some couples receive calls in hiding. We should learn to trust our spouses,” he said.

Sserwanja said matrimony vows had been grossly abused by married couples.

“Many of them make vows just for the sake it, breaking up shortly after. Accepting each other’s weaknesses is vital in marriage,” he said.

Sserwanja decried the increase in witchcraft-related practices in homes.

“Many couples are hiding fetishes under their beds yet they claim to be staunch Christians,” he said.

Sserwanja said alcohol and immorality had also promoted adultery.

“Many men have resorted to drinking alcohol and smoking. Others return home in the wee hours and inconvenience their wives with the smell of alcohol and cigarettes.

Sserwanja urged parents to be exemplary to their children and to ensure that they are morally upright.

Retired West Buganda Diocese Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Samuel Keefa, and his predecessor, Bishop Godfrey Makumbi, were among the clergy who attended the event with their spouses.
