KAMPALA High Court will on July 25 start the hearing of Lydia Draru’s murder trial over the death of Maj. Gen. James Kazini.

Lady Justice Monica Mugenyi will preside over the hearing.

Draru, alias Atim, was committed to the High Court for trial by Makindye Court Grade Two magistrate Maxensia Namagembe last year.

Only the High Court has the powers to try capital offences, such as murder, which Draru is accused of. The offence attracts a maximum sentence of death on conviction.

Draru, 28, was charged with the offence in November last year after she confessed to the murder in a recorded extra-judicial statement that she made before Buganda Road Court magistrate John Wekesa.

Draru allegedly murdered Kazini on November 10, 2009 at her home in Namuwongo during a domestic brawl.

Justice Mugenyi is to hear over 29 cases, 15 of which are for robbery, five for murder, seven for defilement, one for treason and one for kidnap.

Over 70 suspects will be tried in the criminal session, seven for murder, 36 for robbery, seven for defilement, 14 for treason and one for kidnap.
