FORMER national champion Ponsiano Lwakataka could be handed the task of hitting the road first in the KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally next week.

According to the official entry list forwarded to world motorsport governing body, FIA, Lwakataka is ahead of reigning African champion Jammie Whyte of Zimbabwe.

Lwakataka registered shortly before closure on Sunday but he tops the list that is most likely to be adopted as a start-list.

Asked why Lwakataka (Subaru) who is neither a national champion nor the championship leader is at the top, event secretary Mukiibi Katende cited safety.

“That’s purely for safety reasons. He is very fast especially when it comes to the Pearl Rally and you wouldn’t want safety issues to come up when he overtakes. That list is however subject to confirmation by the stewards,” Mukiibi stated.

The Pearl has adopted a ‘Safety First’ theme which has been emphasised among all stakeholders including competitors.
