Connect me to successful pig farmers
Editor - I am a young graduate who would like to engage in pig rearing. I am in the process of drawing up a business plan. I would, therefore, like to meet some successful pig farmers so that I can get some ideas from them. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Editor’s note: It is good you are taking the trouble to draw up a business plan for your pig enterprise. That is the way to go. Starting a business without a plan is one proven way of ensuring failure. Harvest Money has profiled a number of successful pig farmers, who include Kigozi Kaweesa (0772-343150/0702-343150), and Gertrude Olivia Nakalungi Sitenda of Sogena Farming Agency found in Nammere Mpererwe off Gayaza road (0772413916) For more information, please visit Harvest Money stall at the National Farmers Show which will take place July 18th -24th in Jinja.

What does it take to rear rabbits, ostriches?
Editor - Thank you very much for the wonderful work you are doing in educating the public about farming and showing them that farming can be done by anyone. I need your help on the following issues.
1. I would like to start a small farm, rearing rabbits for meat. What does it take to rear rabbits? How does one take care of them? Where is there market?
2.Sometime back you wrote something small about ostrich farming. I have watched a few documentaries on ostrich farming in South Africa and Zimbabwe and I really liked the idea. It got me wondering, what it would take me to start an ostrich farm. Where can I get an ostrich chick? How would I take care of them in terms of feeding and treatment. Thank you very much and I look forward to hearing from you.

Editor’s note: Since you live in Entebe, the nearest source of information is Wild Life Education Centre, formerly the zoo. There you will have a close encounter with a real ostrich. There is a network of hunters and traders in eastern Uganda who deal in ostrich eggs collected from Karamoja region. They can even get you a young ostrich. About rabbits, most farmers abandoned them after the hyped foreign market failed to materialise.
However, a few people have resumed keeping them, mainly for home consumption, after discovering the health benefits of eating rabbit meat. The current high price of poultry and pig feeds has also forced farmers to re-consider rabbit farming, because they are cheaper to feed. There is a market for rabbit meat; as long as your selling price remains realistic. (sh4,000 –sh5,000 per kg) For ostrich and rabbit parent stock, you can advertise in the Market Place section of Harvest Money. Breeders will contact you with their offers.
