HARDLY a year after the ban on transporting of students on lorries, Police in Masaka have intercepted three lorries transporting students.

Early this year, several students and teachers were killed and others sustained serious injuries in accidents involving two lorries carrying students.

The Masaka District OC Traffic, Andrew Muyambi said one of the trucks, registration No. UAD-558 F which was loaded with over 80 students was coming from Mbuye Farm School in Rakai.

Another track loaded with 146 pupils of Busagala Primary School in Bukomansimbi district was intercepted on its way to Masaka Diocese for the Education Week festivals.

Muyambi said the Police also intercepted another truck registration No. UAH-195D which was ferrying students of St Monica High School Kabwoko in Rakai district to Lambu landing site in Masaka for field study tour. The truck driver, Sulaiti Kayanja, was arrested.

The Ministry of Education and Sports together with the Police have issued a strong warning to schools that use lorries to transport pupils.

Only authorised passenger service vans like buses and omni-buses are supposed to transport pupils for activities out of school.

Transporting students on lorries is a breach of the Ministry of Education policy and the traffic regulations and puts the lives of students in danger.
