Breast cancer patients have been warned against using herbal medicines for treatment.

Head of community Cancer program at Uganda cancer institute (UCI) Dr. Noleb Mugisha said that many of the patients seek treatment at a later stage after failing with herbalists.

“Our experience is that people who use herbal drugs, use it until when the cancer is in its advanced stages and that’s when they come to us for treatment” Mugisha noted.

Speaking during a free breast cancer screening by UCI and Barclays bank in Kamwokya on Thursday Mugisha said that this has increased the number of death cases in the Country.

He however said that there is no data to show the magnitude of the problem.
He added that breast cancer is the second cause of cancer deaths in women, after cervical cancer.

It is mainly reported in women above 35 years and of recent teenage girls have been affected.

Mugisha said breast cancer is preventable and treatable if it is discovered at an early stage calling upon women to carry out regular examinations.
