THE national athletics governing body UAF will for the first time use the recently acquired electronic timer at the two-day national track and field championships at Namboole on the weekend.

And for the first time, a children’s event will run alongside the meet that climaxes the local athletics season.

The unveiling of the electronic timer at the Namboole meet has boosted the sprinters, who warmed up for the two-day event by shining in the Kenya Track and Field Championships in Nairobi over the weekend.

Ugandan athletes will be subjected to the timer for the first time in a local meet.

The sprinters had promising times in Kenya and won all their semi-final heats, but were ruled out of the finals to allow Kenyan athletes showcase their talent.

Germany experts are already in the country to train local officials on how to use the timer. The sh60m equipment was donated to Uganda by the Germany government three months ago.

Meanwhile, Gulu district is putting a 50-man strong team for the championship starting Friday at Namboole, adds Dennis Ojwee.
