WITH about one month to the wedding day of local musician Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, several city tycoons and ministers have jumped into the queue to make contributions.

Bobi Wine says their wedding budget has shot beyond the original sh300m that his committee had planned for, in anticipation of more big guests and parties before and after the wedding.

The wedding is slated for August 21 at Rubaga Cathedral. Bobi Wine says several big people have shown interest in contributing towards the wedding, with the latest being labour state minister Mwesigwa Rukutana.

He said Rukutana had contributed ‘a lot of money; but declined to mention the figure. Other people including MPs, he added, had called him to pick the money.

“Our friends think we deserve more than our budget. Many friends are coming up to make this a celebration for all,” he said.

Bob Wine will tie the knot with his longtime fiancée, Barbie Itungo. The reception will be held at Serena Hotel.

Bobi Wine plans six parties. Several discothèques have offered free service for him and his fans.

Notable contributors are Joseph Kiyimba of Lions Motor Spares and Ambiance Discotheque in Masaka, Hardware World Ntinda, Nyondo Discotheque, Club Volts and Alfredo in Bukoto.

Sudhir Ruparelia, Nick Wavamuno and Elvis Sekyanzi have also contributed.

On Friday, Bobi Wine caused a stampede at the introduction ceremony of his fellow artiste, Ronald Mayinja, when a large crowd followed him, chanting his nickname; “President wa Ghetto”, ‘Mr. Money’.

Itungo was matron to Mayinja’s fiancée, Aisha Nakyeyune.

Bobi Wine received cheers from guests when he showed up dressed in a kanzu. He danced to other artistes’ music before he was called to perform.

After the function, his fans followed him to the gate, blocking his way. He asked a friend to drive away the car and jumped in as security tried to control the crowd. “Mwana abayaaye bange babadde bandyaawo,” he said (meaning his fans had almost overwhelmed him).
