LESS than four months after sealing a five-year $5m (sh12bn) broadcasting deal with Supersport International, the Uganda Super League is reportedly close to securing yet another lucrative sponsorship deal with Nile Breweries.

According to Worldwide marketing services chairman Dennis Mbidde, the company attempting to broker the deal, Nile will inject a whooping sh2.4bn into the Uganda Super League (USL) for a period of three seasons starting with the upcoming 2011/2012 season.

Mbidde told New Vision yesterday that: “This is going to benefit all the clubs in the USL and will take the game to a whole different level.”

If the deal succeeds, an estimated sh800m will be spent on providing jerseys to all the 16 clubs in the league and football awards ceremonies every season.

In a related but probably unfortunate development, sports development in schools is likely to suffer a major setback with the reported withdrawal of major sponsors Coca-Cola.

The grassroots football programme is among the sports events that will be greatly affected if reports that Coca Cola are due to close their sponsorship taps for Under-14 Cup this year are confirmed. The event was due in June.

Already, the Sprite schools basketball that was due this month is no more on the schools calendar.

The soft drinks company also withdrew from the schools rugby early this year.

Organising committee official Raphael Bwire said the funding was affected because of the restructuring at the Centenary Bottling Company plant in Namanve.

When New Vision contacted Coca-Cola demand creation manager Kennedy Mutenyo could not confirm or deny the development.

“We shall be communicating something very soon. Kindly wait for the official communication,” said Mutenyo.

Coca-Cola sponsors the annual prestigious secondary schools soccer tournament.
