Witnesses pin Basajja over assault

THE trial of city tycoon Hassan Basajjabalaba started with two prosecution witnesses who pinned him over assault.

Arthur Kintu, a Newvision Journalist told the Buganda Road Court Magistrate Evans Palodi that on Septmber 6, 2010 Basajjabalaba punched him on the face and injured his lips at Mandela National Stadium.

He explained that he took Basajjabalaba’s pictures because he had been successfully voted the Chairman of Entrepreneurship. Court also heard that even when Kintu showed Basajjabalaba his accreditation card to cover the function, he ignored and instead asked, “Who gave you permission, do you know I can box you?”

Kintu further noted, “I immediately reported the matter to the police officers who were overseeing the function and they advised me to go to the police surgeon for medical report.”

He added that other journalists from different media oraganisations who witnessed the incident saw how violently Basajjabalaba confronted and assaulted him.

The second prosecution witness, Henry Mukasa a senior Jounalist with Newvision Publication told court that he witnessed from a distance of about five meters Basajjabalaba punching Kintu many times in space of less than five minutes.

Mukasa also told court that he saw Kintu’s lips bleeding and accompanied him to Kabalagala police post for medical examination.

Prosecution led by Patricia Cingtho, said Basajjabalaba, during the NRM primaries on September 6, 2010 at Mandela National Stadium in Wakiso district, unlawfully assaulted Kintu and occasioned bodily harm on him. Basajjabalaba who was represented by Obed Mwebesa and Dennis Byaruhanga denied the charges and court adjourned to August 8, 2011 for hearing.
