JOACHIM Bakungu clocked 30:47 to win the second edition of the Buganda Road Race in Mengo.

The upcoming athlete outsprinted UPDF runner and race favourite Joseph Nsubuga with half a kilometre to go, to win his maiden race.

“The race was so competitive but thanks to God that the four months training I had helped me to win. I’m eyeing the national championship as well.” Bakungu said.

Elephesu Onigiro was also on top form beating Abu Mayanja and Deus Sebirori to the 5km top prize.

The event that had over 3000 participants attracted prominent people that included the Katikkiro of Buganda John Baptist Walusimbi, Prince David Wassajja, MPs and other dignitaries.

Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, the Katikkiro tasked the organisers to make the race one of the biggest sports events in the country starting next year.

“Next time I want the Buganda Road Race to hit the one-million mark. We will start early and can make it,” Walusimbi vowed.

The top seven athletes in both categories will share a cash prize of sh2m.
