A sterilizing unit is an electrical appliance that sterilizes baby feeding utensils. It is designed with different units to accommodate 4-5 containers. All you have to do is wash out all traces of milk and food from the utensils using soapy water and rinse. Then pour clean water in the unit to cover all the utensils in water. Cover with a lid, plug and switch on. When ready, the unit switches off automatically. Prices for sterilisers range from sh250,000 to sh500,000.
Alternatively, you can use the sterilizing solution or tablets. The most common brand on the market is the Milton solution or tablets. All you have to do is put the utensils in warm soapy water. Using a bottle brush, remove all the traces of milk and food and rinse with warm water. Then half-fill a plastic container with clean cold water, add the solution or one tablet for every five litres of water and leave to dissolve. Submerge all the utensils and leave to sit for 15 minutes.
A bottle of 500ml Milton solution costs sh9,000 while a pack of 28 Milton tablets costs sh12,000.
