The Police on Friday deployed at the city abattoir to calm down meat dealers who became rowdy and shouted down a team sent by the tenderer, Hassan Basajjabalaba.

Jinja Road Police chief Chris Katumba led the team of armed Police officers.

Basajjabalaba had reportedly sent a team to explain the new management guidelines to the meat dealers.

The rowdy meat dealers caused the meeting to end prematurely.

Two groups emerged during the meeting, one supporting Basajjabalaba’s management while another opposed him. The opposing group rejected the new guidelines that were announced.

The chairman City Abattoirs Traders’ Association, Abbey Mugumba, addressed a parallel meeting and was largely cheered.

However, the pro-Basajjabalaba group chanted “no change” slogan and gathered around Issa Nsubuga, an agent of Basajjabalaba.

Mugumba’s group complained that the abattoir was in a poor state.

They said the facility had dilapidated structures and was stinking, yet management was charging them high taxes. They said each trader paid sh12,000 for checking in an animal at the abattoir.

The traders also said they were being charged sh15,000 for slaughtering, sh2,500 for entering the slaughter house and sh1,000 for skinning.
