WHEN Sam Bananuka was hired from the Old Taxi Park in Kampala, he did not hesitate as he would earn sh100, 000 in less than an hour.Unknown to Sam Bananuka, a 38-year-old father of three, the “passengers” would in the next few minutes shoot him dead.

According to Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Ibin Ssenkumbi two armed thugs on Sunday night asked the deceased and his colleague Juma Kayanja to drive them to Upper Konge in Kampala.

Kayanja and Bananuka had a new taxi registration number UAP 845A, which plied the city-center-Nakawa-Ntinda route.

On getting to Nsambya, a suburb, the two men were joined by another man and the vehicle proceeded to Konge where the thugs led the unsuspecting duo to a cul-de-sac (dead end).

“When the driver reversed so as to turn back, the vehicle fell into a ditch. Suddenly, the thugs pulled out a gun and shot the driver,” Ssenkumbi told the press at Central Police Station in Kampala, adding that Kayanja survived by running away.

Although they are suspected to have targeted the car, the men then took off as Bananuka breathed his last. They could not take the car as it was stuck in the ditch.

The police canine unit went to the scene but the sniffer dogs could not trace the route the killers took, Ssenkumbi said.

“Drivers should be wary of people, who approach them with seemingly lucrative deals at night. Passengers should be checked. And in this case, they should have smelt a rat,”Ssenkumbi stated.

Bananuka was yesterday laid to rest in Kawanda-Matugga in Wakiso district. The police recently warned that thieves were lately conniving with “pregnant” women to rob cars from cab drivers.

In another tragedy, a nine-year-old boy died when lightning struck their home in Kiteeza, Ntenjeru sub-county in Mukono district on Sunday afternoon.

Ssenkumbi identified the dead boy as Edward Kiwanuka. The other members of his family namely his father, Bruno Kiwanuka, siblings Gerald Kawuma, 13 and Jariah Nassuna, 8, were rushed to Mukono health center.

Quoting experts, Ssenkumbi advised that if possible, people should avoid using electronics when it is raining in addition to putting on shoes, slippers or sandals when outdoors.
