POLICE deployed heavily in Mbarara on Wednesday to prevent a demonstration called by the opposition in the area to protest the rampant load shedding.

Anti-riot Police stood at strategic places in the scotching sun the whole day to quash demonstrators under their umbrella body ‘Electricity drive pressure group’.

The organizers called off the demonstration after the heavy deployment.

The peaceful demonstration that was intended to begin from Nyamityobora Market through Mbarara town to Umeme offices on Wednesday flopped following the deployment of about five trucks of teargas and water spray were stationed in the heart of the town opposite Stanbic bank, Kobil petrol station at 2 miles along Mbarara-Masaka road.

Police also deployed at Umeme offices near Mbarara Post office along Mbarara-Kabale Highway, near Mbarara secondary School in Kakoba and others were patrolling home to home in Kijungu suburb, Nyamityobora ward in Kakoba Division where the demonstration was intended to start.
