EDUCATION and Sports minister Jessica Alupo has called on members of the East African Community to use sports as a means of bringing togetherness and development in the region.

Alupo was speaking at the closing ceremony of the East Africa Secondary Schools games Sunday at Kakyeka Stadium.

Alupo declined to comment about the teachers’ strike that has been the talk of the country for the last couple of weeks. The new school term started yesterday.

She said that East Africans should use sport to break the barriers that have been hindering good relationships in the region.

In the boys’ football final, St. Mary’s Kitende beat fellow Ugandans Kibuli 3-0 to retain the trophy for the sixth time in a row while in the girls’ football, Kenya’s Archbishop Njenga defeated fellow Kenyans Tartar 1-0 to lift the trophy.

Rwandan school Nyamasheki won the boys’ and girls’ handball while another Rwandan side Apapeki beat Kitende to win the boys’ volleyball in the event sponsored by Brookside.
