MANY gardens are made of interconnected areas of different levels and at times some areas can be so high that they create problematic embankments.
It is, therefore, advisable to ensure that all areas of different levels are worked on satisfactorily to make them proportional to each other and the house.
There are three basic ways of manipulating change of level to your advantage.
You may follow natural lines, making sure that any slope or bank is contoured in a realistic way to make it functional. You may use a number of terraces, creating flat areas connected by flights of steps. You may create a more abrupt and very formal change with a brick or stone retaining wall.
You may need to think of having ramps in some access areas to ease the traffic of wheel chairs and trolleys.
