With the majority of national team players turning professional last month the local golf governing body UGU will rely on the Uganda Open to rebuild a new squad to defend the East African title.

UGU secretary Johnson Omollo told New Vision yesterday that he was more concerned with the selection puzzle than the departure of established national team players.

“There are youngsters with great potential. The Uganda Open, that runs September 21-24, will help us sort them out. We will consider form and the four-day tournament is a good test of form and endurance,” Omollo remarked.

Vice-captain Emma Opio, Ian Odokonyero, Fred Wanzala, Said Mawa and Grace Ocici quit amateur ranks.

Uganda will defend its East African Challenge title in Tanzania in November with a largely new team.

A new team is expected to be built around ex-professional Stephen Kasaija, Lawrence Muhenda, Henry Lujja and Ronald Muhumuza.

The inter-regional tournament and Dasani Golf Series revealed teenagers with great potential.

“We are going to encourage upcountry players to compete in the Uganda Open and they can end up in the national team,” Omollo said.
