THE Lugogo Cricket Oval will tomorrow host a highly anticipated event among the Ugandan Indian Community — India Day.

In Uganda, India Day is usually celebrated a few weeks after August 15, the day India celebrates its independence.

Everything at the celebrations is entirely Indian, right from musical performances, comedy shows, body art and the spiced foods.

Previously, the day has been celebrated at Kati Kati, but with its growing popularity, it had to shift to a bigger venue.

Every year, a different sub-community of the Indian community in Uganda is tasked to organise the day. This year’s event has been organised by the Patidar Samaj community (the Patels).

Proceeds from the event usually go to charity, since the Indian Association of Uganda facilitates heart surgeries for 20 Ugandan children every year. This year however, due to the soaring dollar rate, only 12 children under the age of 12 will be flown to India for surgery.

Tomorrow’s event will be graced by Indian stars: playback singer Raja Hassan and TV singer Rehaan Khan and Ugandan artistes, who will be curtain-raisers. There will also be a 10-member live band from India. Ambassadors of all the East African countries are some of the dignitaries on the guest list.
