KAMPALA Capital City Authority (KCCA) has issued guidelines to regulate operation of kiosks in the city centre and its suburbs.

News vendors, telecom products, watch repairers, stamp makers and shoe shiners will be the only ones allowed to operate kiosks in the city centre, according to a statement issued by the executive director, Jennifer Musisi, on Thursday.

Following the eviction of street vendors, newspaper bosses asked Musisi to provide their vendors space where they can operate. Registration of newspaper vendors is still going on.

The operators have to seek permission and pay fees in order to erect kiosks in the areas gazetted by the KCCA physical planning directorate.
“Permit shall be issued on temporary terms and renewal would be made annually,” Musisi said.

She pointed out that kiosks will not be allowed on Parliamentary Avenue, Apollo Kaggwa Road, Nile Avenue, Ternan Avenue and Kampala Road (Entebbe Road junction to Shell capital).
The guidelines also recommend the material in which the kiosks will be built and their size.

All kiosks in the central division are expected to be made out of fibre glass or aluminium, while those in the city suburbs may be made of metal or wood.
During a press conference on Thursday, Musisi said KCCA would soon start demolishing illegal kiosks in the city.

Dealers in telecommunication infrastructure such as cables and masts have also been advised to apply for permission to install their facilities.

Companies will be accountable for restoring the road after laying their cables, while those applying to erect masts would be required to present all the necessary documents from different stakeholders before approval by KCCA.
