A Police officer attached to the Jinja Central Police Station has accused a UPDF officer for allegedly conniving to rob Orient Bank, Jinja branch.

Tobias Mbonekyeirwe told Jinja Grade One magistrate, Patricia Amoko, last week that Lance Cpl. Norman Ssembatya, attached to Entebbe Special Forces Group (SFG) confessed to hatching the plan.

Mbonekyeirwe, added that while at Nalufenya Police Station, Ssembatya said he would reveal his accomplices.

“He looked jolly as I led him to the office of the regional Police Professional Standards Unit (PPSU) where he freely narrated what he wanted to be recorded,” Mbonekyeirwe said.

“Ssembatya said he dropped out in Senior Five. We spoke in English and he was more fluent than I,” he added.

Mbonekyeirwe said after recording the statement, he read it back to the soldier and that he did not disagree with its contents.

“Ssembatya signed against his statement after revealing his two accomplices, Darlin Nuwamanya and Abbey Mugerwa, both attached to Orient Bank, Jinja branch,” the Police officer said.

Nuwamanya was the eastern region public relations officer, while Mugerwa was in charge of customer care, at the bank.

Meanwhile, the PPSU officer, Steven Musobya, testified that he did not know any of the accused persons and said he only offered his office to Mbonekyeirwe to conduct an interrogation of a suspect in connection with attempted robbery.

“I did not see any suspect but he told me that he had one who had conceded participating in the said scandal and that he was ready to record a charge-and-caution statement,” Musobya said.
