R. Serugo v S.Jong-Hung
RONALD Serugo is two fights away from a slot at the 2012 London Olympics.
Serugo, who returns to action on Monday against South Korean Shin Jong-Hun, has to reach the quarter finals of the ongoing World Championships to be assured of a place in London.
The Ugandan light fly started off the two-week event in Baku, Azerbaijan, by defeating El Salvador’s Jhon Corona 15-6 on Monday. Uganda’s other participant Atanus Mugerwa lost to Algerian Mohammed Oadahi on Tuesday.
Serugo however faces a tough hurdle on Monday morning. Shin won the light flyweight bronze medal at the 2009 World Championships, which was his first international competition, defeating Cuban champion Daniel Matellon Ramos in the quarterfinals
The Ugandan is not shaken. After winning an All Africa Games bronze in Maputo last month, he promised to soar even higher in Baku.
Serugo brings a wealth of experience having featured at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the previous world meet in Milan.
The top 10 boxers in each weight in Baku will earn Olympics places.
