KCCA starts vaccinations against measles

Kampala City has launched a mass measles immunization exercise in the city and its suburbs.The one week exercise started in Makindye Division, Kisungu, Kayogoga zone.

Kampala City has launched a mass measles immunization exercise in the city and its suburbs.The one week exercise started in Makindye Division, Kisungu, Kayogoga zone.

 
At the launch of the exercise,  the director of health services, Kampala Capital City Authority Dr. Livingstone Makanga said that reason, for choosing Makindye as a model division was because it was the most risk.
 
Reports from the city indicated the first case of measles outbreak in Kampala was reported in Makindye.
 
“We have chosen this division because the ministry of Health proclaimed it as one of the most at risk division in the Kampala,” Makanga said.
 
He said that the target of the ministry was to have children below five years immunized upon to reduce the spread of the disease. The ministry is targeting 32,000 children to be immunized in Kampala.
 
The exercise will be done in all the five divisions of Kampala at all KCCA health facilities, major hospitals like Butabika, Mulago, Old Kampala hospital, Rubaga, at Schools, churches and identified health facilities. KCCA identified 105 centres where children are to be immunized.
 
Last week government announced the outbreak of the diseases in 14 districts in the country
 
Other districts that the ministry identified included Kaliro, Bududa, Bukedea,Mbale, Luwero,Kabarole, Moyo, Nakasongola, Bushenyi, Namutimba,Namaingo, Ntungamo and Rakai.
 
Makanga said the exercise will be conducted by the ministry of health, KCCA in collaboration with other stakeholder  like Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and police.
