EDITOR: Last week, Makerere University was closed as a result of the strike by lectures who are demanding a pay rise.

The closure means great loss on the side of parents and students, especially those on private sponsorship. The Presidents’ intervention to solve the problem has yielded nothing. It is the Government which allowed National Insurance Corporation (NIC) to manage the lecturers' money has still failed to stop the wrangles between NIC and the lecturers.

The students and their parents were not party to the agreements between NIC and the Government and so their rights should not be violated. It is the Government’s obligation to solve the problem of the lecturers' salaries and pension. Makerere cannot remain closed.
