COMMONWEALTH GAMES-After a medal-less international campaign at the World Athletics Championships, focus turns to the Ugandan youth team that is headed for the fourth edition of the Youth Commonwealth Games. The 14-man squad will feature in athletics (track), badminton, cycling and swimming at the games due September 7-13 in Isle of Man. Uganda Olympic Committee secretary general Peninah Kabenge said: “This is a breeding ground for the future of Ugandan sports as we continue to build for the Olympics.” Charles Ssekyaaya won a bronze medal in the 56kg weightlifting category at the 3rd edition in Pune, India in 2008.

Makubuya Cup draws 12 teams
SOCCER-Over 12 clubs have registered for this year’s Makubuya memorial soccer competition. Defending champions Walukuba West, Walukuba East, Boda Boda, Yale High, Victor Young Butagaya, Buwenda, Masese, Kimaka and Jinja Arsenal are among the teams that have shown interest in the event. The tournament will be held later this month in Jinja. Other clubs expected to feature include St. Jude, Mpumudde, Bugembe and Central Tiger.

Masaka requires sh250m for 2011
SOCCER-Masaka LC team management has drawn a sh250m budget for the new Super League season. The team which finished in eighth position during the 2010/11 super league competition used a budget of sh150m. “We want to improve our ranking in the super league, so we have made strategies to improve the welfare of players compared to last year when we faced financial and administration setbacks,” the district council chairman, Joseph Kalungi said.

Namutumba gets a sports academy
SOCCER-A new sports academy, the first of its kind in the Busoga region, has been opened at Bugobi sub county in Namutumba district. The proprietor of Bugobi Sports Academy, Mawazi Bisinde, who is also the FUFA delegate for Namutumba district said the facility will help groom young talent for exposure to the international market.Bisinde said the academy is to organize its first under-17 football tournament starting November 12.

KCC FC financial crisis boils over

KCC’s FC’s financial woes were once again exposed after a friendly match against Masaka LC at Nakivubo which the Lugogo side won 3-2. For the last one month talk from Lugogo seemed to suggest that the club was in dire financial straits. The issue reached boiling point on Friday when players demanded their unsettled transport allowances. Goalkeeper Godfrey Wakabu led the chorus against the officials for the unpaid allowances. Club spokesman Aldrine Nsubuga said the players will soon be paid.

Mary Hill attracts hundreds for run
ATHLETICS-Hundreds of long distance runners, both young and old, will this Saturday throng the streets of Mbarara town and its outskirts, to take part in the Mary Hill High School organised road race. Participants have been drawn from private companies and schools like Ntare, Mbarara High, St. Joseph’s and Nyakayojo. The 10km race is aimed at generating funds to complete a science block for the school.

New coaches bred
SOCCER-A one-week beginners’ football coaching course has started off in Lira with 7 participants. The course conducted at Uganda Technical College started on Monday. The course was earlier scheduled for August 8 but was postponed for logistical reasons. The event is under the auspices of Ugasport in conjunction with the sports ministry. Former Cranes captain Jimmy Kirunda is conducting the course assisted by Leo Alani, Alfred Adoko and Isaac Paddy Kinu.
