FOLLOWING weeks of profound uncertainty as to whether the domestic football league would ever start, the belated season finally commences today with two mouth-watering fixtures that should engineer tension and drama.

Season opening matches are often most fascinating and exciting when there are sub-plots and emotions involved.

And the URA-Express engagement, that follows the early kick-off involving league debutantes Bidco against Water, should be no exception on the evidence of how the two clubs’ build-up to the new season has unfolded.

Just two months ago, Express were rocked in administrative turmoil, with club coach Sam Ssimbwa also threatening to abandon the club in protest of the club’s disappointing player recruiting exercise.

However a change in administration that saw Bbale Mugera re-instated in place of Kavuma Kabenge, has given the club some sort of stability

The onus is now on the playing staff to justify their place among the elite.

“We are prepared despite the politics surrounding the league. URA is a good side compared to us but football is all about team work and organization and that is what we are going to employ,” Ssimbwa stated yesterday.

To match any ambitions, teams more often than not need a strong spine running from defence through midfield into attack. The two sides are excellently served.

Although Ssimbwa has not had sufficient finances to cluster his side with a number of high-profile stars, he has still done commendable work with the club in pre-season.

He has handled his team’s groundwork with tact and there is a general feeling of goodwill among the players.

In fact, if Express succeeds in claiming the scalps of URA, then one of the main reasons for that will largely be as a result of his success in making his squad content.

League defending champions URA have bought well and will challenge all their experienced stars including the biggest arrival in the shape of Vincent Kayizzi, to perform to the very best of their powers.

Just like the previous season, the tax collectors will continue to build their attacking play on the youthful shoulders of Robert Ssentongo and Augustine Nsumba with Steven Bengo and Kayizzi popping up to devastating effect from deep.

Uganda’s all-time 45-goals record league scorer Andrew Mukasa will take part in the game at a later stage. “We are ready for the game,” said URA coach Alex Isabirye.

URA registered a double over Express last season, thrashing them 3-1 in Lugazi and 1-0 at Wankulukuku in the return leg.
