FORMER VICE President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya says that much as he was dropped from the country’s second best seat, this can never be the end of his future plans.

“I’m an educated man and I was groomed well while schooling. This means that even if I was cut off from the high level politics, I can still do a lot of this for my people,” Bukenya said.

He made the remarks on Saturday while officiating at the inaugural dinner of St. Edward’s Bukuumi’s alumni, at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

“The knowledge I acquired from school, can never be taken away from me, much as one may take away all other things. It is this knowledge which will make me fulfill all that I planned,” Bukenya added.

It was started in 1945 by the White Fathers commonly known as the Verona Brothers. It was initially a boys’ only school, but today it is mixed. In 1948, it was handed over to the brothers of Christian Instruction for management, up to the present day.

He explained that apart from his mother, he profoundly loves St. Edwards’ SS Bukuumi, because it helped him transform when he was a youth. It was one of the schools, he says, he was banished to since it was far upcountry, when he misbehaved as a youth.

He called upon the youths in the country to utilise the education opportunities at their disposal to get a better future. “I respect this school because it transformed me, to what I’m today,” he added.

Bukenya was at the dinner flanked Kasirivu Atwooki (MP) Bugangaizi West, the Managing Director of Geomaps Surveyors John Musungu and the school’s current headmaster Br. Deodati Aganyira.

Bukenya was educated by the Brothers of Christian Instruction order in Uganda. He had his early education at St. Savio Primary School, Kisubi, St. Mary's College Kisubi, St. Edward SS and St. Henry's College Kitovu.

Later, he joined Makerere University School of Medicine in the 1970s where he graduated with the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

While outside Uganda, he obtained the degrees of Master of Science from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine UK and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) specialising in Public Health from the University of Queensland.

In the 1980’s, the war tore down St. Edward’s Bukuumi and that sparked off the school’s decline. In early 1990’s the school was still slipping. But in the later late 90’s it started crawling back to glory.
