PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has applauded proprietors of the Sameer Group of Companies for establishing a fruit processing plant in the country.

Museveni also assured the group that Uganda had a sufficient supply of fruits from various parts of the country.
The fruits, he said, are from the districts of Kayunga, Luweero, Soroti and Masaka, according to a State House statement.

The President said the four districts had been supplying fruits for export, mainly to South Sudan. He made the remarks on receiving a delegation from the organisation at State House, Nakasero on Sunday.

The delegation was led by the Sameer Group chairman, Nashod Meralli.
Meralli presented to the President samples of the packed fruit juice from the new plant.

He assured Museveni that their company was in advanced stages to begin full-scale processing of mangoes, passion, apple and pineapple fruit juice.
Sameer Group of Companies is also involved in processing dairy products.
The company also processes powder milk, low fat UHT milk, ghee, butter, yoghurt and fresh liquid milk.

Sameer Group began operations in the country in 2006 after entering into agreement with the Government of Uganda to lease the assets of the Dairy Corporation in Kampala.

The group has in the five-year period of operations increased production of processed milk from 50,000 to 120,000 litres per day and invested $11.5m (sh32.2bn) to boost the dairy sector.
It installed milk coolers in south-western Uganda and now in the central region.

The company, apart from increasing milk tankers to improve the transportation of raw milk to the processing plant in Kampala, has also invested nearly $15m (sh45b) in the establishment of a milk drying plant.
The milk drying plant has capacity to handle 200,000 litres of milk everyday.
