Head teachers in Masaka district have been directed to start preparing lunch for teachers.

Joseph Kalungi, the district chairperson, gave the directive on Saturday while addressing primary school teachers and head teachers at St. Bruno Ssaza Primary School in Masaka district.

Kalungi said it did not make sense to ask parents to pay for their children’s lunch when the teachers spend the day at school without lunch.

Kalungi’s directive comes after a group of teachers told him that their pupils performed poorly at national exams because teachers did not have lunch at school.

The teachers had convened to discuss challenges affecting their work and to know the changes in the primary school curriculum.

Kalungi asked the head teachers to use gardens at their schools to cultivate food.

“You must know that lunch is one of the incentives that give teachers energy to do their work,” Kalungi said.

He warned the teachers and school administrators against asking pupils to dig in school gardens as a punishment, saying it would make them think negatively about agriculture.

Kalungi asked teachers to supplement their income by praticising agriculture.
