PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has pledged sh30m towards the construction of a sh1.2b centenary complex for Busoga College Mwiri.

The President’s pledge was announced by the Speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, who represented him at celebrations to mark 100 years of Busoga College Mwiri’s existence.

The function was held at the school on Saturday.

Kadaga said the money would be delivered in cash very soon.

The organising committee chairman and ICT minister, Ruhakana Rugunda, described the complex as an important landmark in the school’s history.

The multi-purpose three-storey project, whose foundation is complete, will comprise a staffroom, offices, a library and a hall on the first floor. The second and third floors will be occupied mostly by classrooms.

The construction work, which is being done with financial contributions from parents and well-wishers, is set to resume before the end of this year, the headmaster, John Mukubira, disclosed.

Kadaga challenged members of the Mwiri Old Boys Association who turned up for the ceremony to mobilise their colleagues within and outside the country to help rebuild the school to its former glory.

“I would like to see Mwiri regain its leading position in various disciplines including academics and sports. From 1911 to 2011, Mwiri has produced an army of successful people who can help revive the institution that shaped them into what they are today,” she observed

Kadaga said the murrum road from the Jinja-Iganga highway, leading to the school would be rebuilt together with that from Bugembe town council to Igenge hill where a new palace for the Kyabazinga is under construction.

Kadaga asked Prince William Gabula Nadiope, a great-grandson to Yosiya Nadiope, the former Kyabazinga of Busoga credited for starting the school, to greet the congregation. Gabula is also an old boy of the school.

The function attracted several dignitaries and old boys, including former ministers Wanume Kibedi and Henry Kyemba as well as former Chief Justice Samuel Waako Wambuzi and Prof. Asavia Wandira.

Lands minister Daudi Migereko said a lot had been said about Mwiri’s past and achievements. He called on stakeholders to focus on the school’s future.

Prof. Francis Tusubira, the chairman board of governors, emphasised the need to adopt information and communication technology in the school’s operations.
