MPs probing the botched purchase of 70,000 bicycles for local council chairpersons have ordered middleman Patrick Bagarukayo to produce the director of Amman Impex, Arjunan Rajesekaran.

Rajesekaran is said to have duped the Government and failed to deliver the bicycles.

Committee vice-chairperson Raphael Magyezi yesterday said the committee had told Bagarukayo to ask Rajesekaran to go and explain why he had failed to deliver the bicycles.

“He knows this man. We want him to lead us to him if we are to deliver the warrant of arrest,” said Magyezi.

Bagarukayo told the committee on Monday that he would produce Rejesekaran when asked. “I can invite him to come to Uganda so that he can explain how the whole thing happened,” Bagarukayo assured MPs on Monday.

Bagarukayo admitted to dealing with Amman Impex, the company that was contracted to provide the bicycles at a total cost of sh4.7b.

Bagarukayo said he withdrew sh1.1b of the money and paid Rajesekaran.

He said the rest of the money was his (Bagarukayo’s) commission.
