HOIMA Catholic Diocese will lead the forthcoming Uganda Martyrs day celebrations that are held on June 3 of every year at Namugongo.

The annual event commemorates the heroic 45 Catholic and Anglican martyrs, who were killed by burning and beheading for their faith on orders of Buganda king Mwanga between 1885 and 1887.

The Diocese has announced a special prayer for the successful preparations. The prayer in English, Runyoro and Rutooro was launched by diocesan bishop, Vincent Kirabo at Catholic Secretariat Nsambya on Thursday.

Last year, Kiyinda-Mityana diocese hosted the day.

The twenty-two Catholic Martyrs were beatified on June 6, 1920 by Pope Benedict XV. They were declared saints on October 18, 1964 by Pope Paul VI.

According to diocesan bishop, the celebrations will be held under theme: "Stand Firm in the Faith" (Col 2:7).

Bishop Kirabo urged the Christians and well-wishers to contribute generously towards the preparations. “We have opened a bank account in Centenary Bank Hoima branch, No. 8010602365.

"The diocese last hosted the day in 2001.
