KAMPALA - If your vehicle has not been moving for a long time; please try to get to the mechanic to check your car to ensure that it is in good mechanical condition before you hit the road again.

The Joint security taskforce has said all vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition (DMC) will be impounded if they get to the road after the easing of the restrictions on transport on Tuesday.

The warning was issued by the Prisons Spokesperson, Frank Baine on behalf of the taskforce while addressing journalists at Uganda Media Centre (UMC) in Kampala.

"Security will not hesitate to arrest you if your car exhibits characteristics of a DMC. Kindly ensure that your car is in good running condition," Baine said.

Private cars will be allowed to move starting tomorrow May 26 while restrictions on public transport will be relaxed on June 4 as government moves to open up the economy.

Announcing the move on Tuesday, May 12 last week, President Yoweri Museveni was, however, quick to say that this will apply only in 95 districts out of 135 that make up the country.

Museveni disclosed that transport restrictions would remain in place in all the 40 districts that border Uganda and other countries.

Security is also worried that people may emerge out of the lockdown with excitement which may cause increased accidents.

"Do not drive with excitement and cause accidents because one of the things we had benefited from COVID-19 are reduced accidents on all of our roads. Now we are getting back, please let us go to the road carefully," Baine said.

He added; "Anybody who will be caught driving recklessly will be arrested. In order to avoid all those, let us prepare to be calm and modest as we get back to the road."

Security also warned that any person who will not have the right documentation and gets the vehicle on the road will also be arrested.
