KAMPALA - Kampala City Council Authority has donated relief food to KCCA casual workers who have been affected by the COVID-19 lockdown in Kawempe division.

The food was handed over to the casual workers by Kawempe division mayor Emmanuel Sserunjogi and the town clerk Moses Ssempa. Kawempe councillors were also present as the vulnerable workers received their food at Kawempe division offices.

According to Ssempa, the food donation came at the time it was needed most. "Most of our casual workers are vulnerable and needed some support," Ssempa said.

"The relief food was lobbied for by KCCA executive director Eng. Andrew Kitaka from AVAADA. This food is a form of relief to KCCA casual workers," Ssempa said.

"Kawempe division has received 2.5 tonnes of posho and 1.5 tonnes of beans. This food will be distributed to 509 workers," he revealed.

Ssempa said KCCA casual workers live hand -to -mouth adding that most of them are single mothers with a responsibility to take care of their families. Most of these people are in dire conditions and need a helping hand.

Each worker received 5kg of posho and 3kg of beans. "The relief is not enough, however; it could save our employees from the lockdown hunger," Ssempa submitted.

Sserunjogi commended Kitaka for lobbying food for the casual workers saying the workers have been adversely affected by the lockdown.

He called upon more organizations to donate relief items to Kawempe COVID-19 task force team.
