480 arrested in city for defying COVID-19 directives

Many of the suspects were found drinking in bars, walking past curfew time, operating shops while others were found selling drugs.

At least 480 people have been arrested in the Kampala Metropolitan area for allegedly breaking the Presidential directives on COVID-19.
 
A statement issued on Friday by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said the suspects were arrested during joint security operation last night from various places.
 
"They were arrested from areas of Nakulabye, Kasubi, Namungona, Kawempe, Maganjo, Nansana, Masitowa, Lubigi, Kisasi, Kyanja, Mutungo, Banda, Kireka and Kinawataka," Onyango said.
 
According to Onyango, many of the suspects were found drinking in bars, walking past curfew time, operating shops while others were found selling drugs. 
 
The security teams recovered some exhibits including suspected narcotic drugs and alcohol of different brands. 
 
"The suspects are currently detained at different Police Stations in Kampala Metropolitan Policing area as we investigate allegations of being in possession of suspected narcotics, disobedience of lawful orders and Doing a negligent act likely to cause an infection of disease," Onyango said.
 
The operation was led by the Commander of Kampala Metropolitan Police, Moses Kafeero.
 
The suspects files are being worked on and they will appear in various courts today or Monday next week.
