KAMPALA - Sports journalists under their umbrella body USPA will be among the beneficiaries of the 3,300kg of rice donated by betting company Betway to the COVID-19 relief efforts.

USPA will get 300kg, considering that the sports is one of the many activities suspended in the country.

Betway country manager Adellah Agaba handed over the donation to minister Mary Karooro Okurut (general duties) at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala on Tuesday.

Okurut is leading the donations collections team on the national taskforce.

"We are committed to ensuring that communities we work with are safe and have food and other basic necessities throughout the lockdown period," said Agaba.

"We care about sports development and the communities that support local teams, especially those that we sponsor like Express FC, Betway Kobs and Betway Power.

"That is why we had to support USPA who are on the forefront of promoting sports in the country," she added.

Agaba urged the public to stay safe and observe the health ministry guidelines to curb the spread of the coronavirusa, saying that together, the pandemic can be defeated.

USPA president Patrick Kanyomozi thanked the company for the support and urged others to emulate them.

"We thank Betway for joining our drive to support some of our members who have been hard hit by COVID-19 restrictions. Many of them have been denied an income since cancellation of sports events," he said.

"This and other support will definitely help them live a moderate life as we wait for the sector to be active again."

Last week, local football governing body FUFA donated 12,500kg of rice to the COVID-19 national taskforce, meant for both players and fans.
