Museveni revealed that the locusts that created fear among Ugandans were being defeated by the army teams.

President Yoweri Museveni has appreciated the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) for using innovative methods to kill locusts that had evaded the country.

Museveni revealed that the locusts that created fear among Ugandans were being defeated by the army teams.

"The UPDF team in that area works with the local people. For example, when the locusts invade the area, they (the local people) inform the nearest spray unit, which moves with torches in the night to spray all the locusts," said Museveni.

"For two days they have not appeared because they do not fly during the rainy season but we shall kill them even if they resurface.

We have strengthened our capacity by developing a firefighter at Kaweweta, which we are to use to fight locusts in future," Museveni added.

He said the locusts had not caused any damage in the country.

The President it was not necessary to use aircraft to spray the locusts as the ground teams were well equipped and able to move even at night.

While updating the nation on the fight against COVID-19 situation at Statehouse recently, the President further urged the public to avoid gatherings by remaining at home.

Museveni noted that staying at home would curb the spread of the Coronavirus.

"This is not the first epidemic for there was an outbreak of small pox in 1893 and our ancestors quickly learnt the technic of not gathering," said the President.

He noted that the citizens will also survive since the ancestors followed the same guidelines and survived in the past.

Museveni further appreciated the health workers for putting up outstanding performance in the fight against COVID-19.

He, therefore, requested the politicians and bureaucrats to increase salaries for scientists.

"I urge my partners in the Government to pay our scientists for they are doing a good job.
Let them be paid well to support the citizens. For example, see how much they have saved us from this COVID-19 situation," Museveni noted.
