Former Masaka district Woman Member of Parliament, Fridah Mubanda has handed over protective gear to journalists in Masaka region to guard themselves against COVID-19.

Mubanda said journalists are at high risk of exposing themselves while gathering the news in the field.

Handing over the gear that included gloves, face masks, hand sanitizers, and handwashing equipment on March 26 and 27, Mubanda cautioned the journalists against exposing their family members to the virus.

"Be careful when you go back to your homes, do not endanger your wives and children, the virus is so contiguous, utilize the gear very carefully for your safety," she said.

Mubanda said she was impressed by the media coverage on the COVIS-19, adding that they have helped to control the spread of the pandemic.

Mubanda, who also donated rice to the journalists to support their families, said the media is among the most important institutions in the fight against the virus, especially in the less privileged African nations.

"The nation needs a lot of awareness and publicity to win the battle against coronavirus, lets invest a lot in the fourth estate," she said.

Mubanda said the rural population can be saved by the media.

"It is good that the audience in the rural areas is very attentive to the messages from the radios," he said.
