Police beef ups security over coronavirus

Following the strict guidelines by President Yoweri Museveni to slow the spread of the coronavirus, joint security agencies have focused on observing the ban on travel to and from Uganda.

All border points have been beefed up with additional deployments to ensure strict adherence to the border lockdown.

 

 
A few actions were carried out; on March 21, 9 Tanzanian businessmen dealing in sugar were intercepted by the police Marine unit after they entered Uganda. In Zombo, 6 Chinese and 2 Ugandans who attempted to cross to Bunia, DRC were arrested.  

The police are also focusing on public transport although it has not been banned yet. President Museveni, during his address, asked members of the public to desist from non-essential travel and to observe good hygiene.

According to the Police, the threat of the virus has not stopped crime. "Our officers are still patrolling their jurisdictions and investigating crime," The police press release reads.

In order to lead by example, Police officers have been asked to remain vigilant and limit exposure when responding to medical concerns.

Coronavirus in Masaka

One of the 7 coronavirus suspects being quarantined at Masaka School of Nursing after stealthily sneaking into the district from Dubai, is one of the confirmed 8 new cases the health minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng announced today morning. 

This was revealed by the chairperson of Masaka district Jude Mbabaali.

Ministry of Health officials are in Masaka to attend a crisis meeting on the matter and also to take away the said confirmed person with coronavirus to Kampala for treatment.

 

 
"We have been waiting for the results for the last 24 hours and they have finally confirmed our fears. Our appeal to you is to stay home until the situation improves because the said confirmed person is said to have been in contact with many other persons, Mbabaali said

He added; " In case you develop fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical advice promptly from our Health Centres as this may be due to Corona infection. This will also help to prevent the possible spread of COVID-19 to others."

Coronavirus: Kansanga chairman takes the battle to people

Ever since the outbreak of Coronavirus in Uganda, Gonzaga Yiga, chairperson of Kansanga Kiwafu Zone 'B' in Kampala started a village sensitisation call every morning and evening.

 

 
He reminds his people to wash hands, to keep their homes clean and to follow all the guidelines the Ministry of Health has put in place to prevent COVID-19.

Yiga moves door to door and ends up on the tallest building in the area where he communicates through his speaker reminding residents about the pandemic.

 

 
"We are worried about this pandemic. We call upon the Ministry of health to help us with equipment like sanitizers and temperature guns to screen the people in the village," Yiga said

He added that his village committee was putting the Presidents directive into effect. "We have told parents to keep their children at home."

 

 
"We don't anyone visiting our village during this time. We have told all the landlords to report to us if they see anyone new in the village. Everyone should remain where they are," he warned.

Fighting coronavirus in Kampala

The fight against COVID-19 has become real in the heart of Kampala. Everywhere you go some people masked while others are washing their hands.

 

 
At Antonio's restaurant, before you get into the restaurant, they use a thermal gun to ascertain one's temperature. Anyone with temperatures 38°C and above is told to contact the Ministry of Health immediately.

 

 
Sanitising at taxi park entrances is in high gear. Anyone who tries refusing, risks being mugged or hauled out of the taxi park.

 

 
Some taxi operators have started implementing distancing in their taxi's. Some taxi's are carrying two passengers per row. A taxi is carrying a maximum of 9 passengers.

The battle is real. No taking chances in Uganda

The Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) has deployed heavily along a dozen ungazetted entries and exits at the Uganda- Kenya border as part of the government efforts to fight coronavirus in the country.

 

 
The deployment comes amid intelligence reports that several foreigners and Ugandans were entering the country after cases of COVID-19 virus were confirmed in Kenya two weeks ago, an issue that prompted the government of Uganda to close its borders with the neighbours temporarily.

Some of the ungazzetted routes have been identified as Amudat - Konyau, Looro -North Pokot via Kosike, Kosiroi-Lokitanyala, Lopelipel- Lokwakipi, Rupa-Lokiriama and Naput -Lorugum.

Others include Kotido - Kenya via Kotein, Kalapata-Oropoi via Kamion and Kaabong-Kush in South Sudan among others.

Kaberamaido takes drastic measures to curb COVID-19

Kaberamaido district has taken drastic measures to reduce the possible spread of coronavirus. A district response emergency committee that was formed agreed to have stringent measures in place.

The committee agreed that all healthy units must have only one attendant in case of any patient being admitted which will help in decongestion of health facilities.

An isolation centre has been opened up with one person already quarantined as a precaution measure.

The committee is being headed by the RDC of Kaberamaido, George Edward Onya. He directed all departments to support the health department to control the spread of coronavirus.

The acting district health officer of Kaberamaido, James Daniel Odongo says a surveillance team is in place. The team moves up to villages to cross-check on all persons entering the district.
