Asubo Gafford Ladies defeated Rines 1-0 to close in on Elizabeth Group leaders Makerere University in the FUFA Women Elite League

The result left Gafford in second position with 22 points in the Elizabeth Group, one below leaders Makerere University who were not in action over the weekend, and head coach Mustapha Kayinda feels this gives his players confidence.

"I thank God for helping us to get the win. Our opponent is not a bad team and they defend very well that's why they have conceded few goals. With this victory, we shall continue to push on so that we move top of the group. It's not easy to reach this level, but I believe the commitment of my players has also been vital," Kayinda said.

Nuluh Nakyanzi scored the only goal in the 30th minute for Gafford as their continued their impressive performance in the second-tier league.

Rines coach Bright Nyanzi attributed the loss to the unpreparedness of his players.

"We did not get enough preparations because the players' mindset was to play this match a week ago, and losing two players (Eva Nagayi and Peace Aloya)  to the U17 National team also cost us. But we can't give up despite the fact that we lost to Gafford," noted Nyanzi.

The newly created second-tier women's league is intended to revamp the domestic competition and create revenue-generating avenues for women football.
