The tournament was launched by the speaker of the Buganda kingdom Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule.

The fourth edition of the Kabaka Birthday Volleyball Tournament will be bigger, and better as new categories are introduced for the three-day event slated for March 27-29.

The tournament was launched by the speaker of the Buganda kingdom Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule alongside Buganda Kingdom sports minister Henry Sekabembe and chairman of the Kabaka birthday organising David Mpanga at Bulange, Mengo.

"You don't have to be great to get started, you have to get started if you are to be great. This is why we are working with this team headed by the volleyball federation and all the great partners. In a few years to come, volleyball will be one of the kingdom's major events," Sekabembe said of the fast growth of the sport.

He confirmed that now volleyball is the fastest growing sport within the kingdom and is looking positive going forward.

This year the theme is to raise awareness so that men can take up their role in fighting HIV. The purpose of this edition of the event is to not only grow the sport but also amplify the theme to all stakeholders.

Statistics show that men test late for HIV, they start treatment late which means they die more than any age group from the disease.

Since the burden of HIV prevention, treatment and care fall mostly on the women, this is a way to help encourage male engagement in HIV services which will improve their health and that of their sexual partners and their families.

The event is sponsored by KCCA, UMC Victoria Hospital, JESA, MTN, AAR and Mandulis Energy.

In terms of competition, a new category will be introduced this year and it will be dubbed ‘Masaza championship'. This will add another 36 teams to the three-day
event seeing as teams from 18 counties of Buganda will participate in the event.

Sunrise Primary School is the defending champions of the competition for girls under 12 and 14 categories while Samaritan won the boys under 12 and 14.

The club's competition was taken by Nkumba University for women and men, while Centenary Bank won the corporates category.
