Uganda pledges support to new South Sudan gov't

Rugunda said that a stable and united South Sudan is an important ingredient for a strong and prosperous region and continent.

JUBA - Uganda has welcomed the formation of a transitional unity Government in South Sudan that saw President Salva Kiir bring on board his rival, Dr. Riek Machar as First Vice President and an additional three vice presidents.
 
Uganda also pledged continued support to South Sudan
 
The message was delivered by Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda who represented President Yoweri Museveni at the swearing-in ceremony of the top Government leaders in the South Sudanese capital of Juba on Saturday, February 22, 2020.
 
"Uganda would like to salute President Salva Kiir and all the parties for taking a bold move that has seen the swearing-in of Dr. Machar, Dr. Wani Iga, Taban Deng and Rebecca Garang as vice presidents," Rugunda said.
 
"This is a significant move to the people of South Sudan. You can continue to count on the support and solidarity of Uganda in this journey you have started out," he added.
 
Rugunda said that a stable and united South Sudan is an important ingredient for a strong and prosperous region and continent. 
 
The premier called upon the new leaders to put the interest of South Sudan and its people first.
 
Speaking at the occasion, President Salva Kiir said that with the landmark agreement and swearing-in of vice presidents, peace had come back to South Sudan.
 
President Kiir thanked regional neighbours, notably Uganda for standing with his country amidst a civil war that displaced hundreds of thousands, with the majority ending up as refugees in Uganda.
 
President Kiir further expressed hope that the transitional three-year period will pave the way for refugees and internally displaced people to return to their homes.
 
While speaking to the congregation, Dr. Riek Machar said he was committed to the peace agreement and his new responsibility.
 
"To the people of South Sudan, I want to assure you that we will work together to end your long-suffering," he said.
