WOODBALL

The Uganda Woodball Federation has laid out plans to build the sport in the country.

Federation president Paul Kayongo talked of the need to develop the sport, where a mallet is used to pass a ball through gates.

He made the remarks while receiving new woodball machinery at the federation offices in Mengo on Sunday.

Kayongo, who doubles as the International Woodball Federation vice-president, thanked the Chinese embassy for being at the heart of everything woodball in Uganda.

"The Chinese embassy has been very supportive. They have provided us with this state-of-the-art machinery and so we will put it to good use as we prepare for the World Cup in Malaysia," he said.

Uganda came second in the previous edition that was held at Spenah Beach in Entebbe last year.

This time round, the team is eager to come out as victors in July when they travel to Perlis in Malaysia for the global tournament.

In a bid to develop the sport, the federation has come up with a number of strategies.

"We want to engage key partners to establish a standard woodball course," said Kayongo.

"We also want to strengthen the governance structure of federation member clubs and commissions. This, in the long run, will make club administration easy and we will have the sport played countrywide."

The federation also plans to "enhance the quality of woodball equipment to reach world class standards".
