I am the best candidate for 2021, says Mao

He lashed out at some DP party members that have already endorsed Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine for the presidency.

Democratic Party (DP) president Nobert Mao has said he is the best presidential candidate to lead the Opposition in the 2021 general elections.

Mao made the remarks during a press conference organised by the DP West Nile office. He said the party is open to fronting a joint candidate from the Opposition.

"We believe in the one-to-one module, where each party — UPC, FDC and other political parties — present candidates and we choose one,'' he said.

"We are still in talks over a joint candidate, but in case that does not work out, I am the best candidate for the presidency on the DP ticket. We will not be stranded if the joint decision fails."

He lashed out at some DP party members that have already endorsed Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine for the presidency.

"There are those playing meal card politics as a way of winning elections, we call on them to use institutional mechanisms," he said.

Peaceful transition
Mao noted that a peaceful political transition should not only be an initiative of the Opposition, but of also the ruling party.

He asked the people of West Nile to elect good leaders who can represent them in Parliament.

Mao said the gap between the rich and the poor is still widening yet the rich people's children have better access to universities on government scholarships.

He also said sectarianism has characterised Uganda's labour sector as most people from the northern regions are doing low skilled work such as security guards and cooks.

Harold Acema, a former Ugandan diplomat, said Uganda needs leaders that can oversee a peaceful transition.

Fadhil Lemerigha, the regional spokesperson of DP West Nile, said the party is gaining momentum as most aspirants are associating with the party.

He said the NRM Liberation Day celebrations in Arua were poorly attended, which indicates a problem with the party
