Slow work on Makerere indoor sports facility

Work continues on the Makerere University ultra-modern multi-purpose indoor sports facility, but on a slow pace despite the facility expected to be done by March.
The facility commissioned in 2018 was meant to be completed early last year but up to now Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) engineering brigade in charge of construction has got more work to do.
When Sunday Vision visited the site, it found out that the expansion of space for offices, behind the arena was just still on foundation level, with workers filling in soil.
The structure was expanded from the original 3000 capacity to 5000 capacity seater. However the contractors up to now have put the insulation materials on top of the roof as earlier promised last year.

"I cannot give you the actual period work will be completed, but when I talked to the contractor last year in December, they assured me that work would be completed by March," Peninah Kabenge the University Principal Sports tutor said before referring us to the project manager.
"What I think is that most of their workers have returned to their other sites and so work is a bit slow but we are sure they will finish it," she added.
The facility valued at sh5.57bn is meant to include wash-rooms, parking yard and office space, but work stalled after hosting the third edition of the FISU World University Netball Championships before completion in September 2018.
