Sixteen new faces will battle for the national golf team slots following qualifiers that were held at Entebbe and the Uganda Golf Clubs on Monday and Tuesday.

Defending the Africa Zone IV championship and the Victoria Cup as well as finishing at least second in the All Africa Junior Championships are some of the tasks that await the national golf team that took shape following the qualifiers.

Addressing the top twenty that emerged from the qualifiers at Kitante on Tuesday, Uganda Golf Union president Innocent Kihika asked the team to ensure they remain at par in the three events where Uganda performed exceedingly well last year.

"We expect you to defend the tournaments that we won and try to do better in the rest and at least remain at par in the All Africa Junior Championships," Kihika said.

Uganda will be looking to complete a hat-trick of wins in the Zone IV championship that Uganda is going to host while they will be called on to defend the Victoria Cup against Kenya with the senior team in Nairobi.

But the junior team will be first in the fray in March trying to replicate last year's performance that saw them finish second in the All Africa Junior Championship, en-route to participating in the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan.

The All Africa Golf and the Kenya Amateur Stroke Play Championships are the other international events where the players will be expected to perform to their best. There are also a series of local events that they have to participate in to remain on top of their games as well as earn world ranking points. These include the Uganda Open, the Kitante Open and Palm Valley Open among others which are a must-attend for the national team players.

Among the twenty are 7 junior (U-18) team players who will continue to fight for first-team places for the various assignments. They include Michael Alunga, Godfrey Nsubuga, Marvin Kibirige, Elton Thembo, James Koto, Ibrahim Aliga, and Abdu Kakeeto.
