According to Labeja, the police officer met his fate after he had gone to rescue someone who was being beaten by an angry mob in the area.

An unidentified civilian in Moyo district Tuesday afternoon grabbed a gun from a police officer and shot him dead.

Sources said the incident happened at about 2:00 pm at Afoji village, Afogi sub-county. Efforts to get a comment from Josephine Angucia, the police spokesperson in west Nile proved futile.

But Bob Williams Labeja, the Moyo resident district commissioner, confirmed the incident.

According to Labeja, the police officer met his fate after he had gone to rescue someone who was being beaten by an angry mob in the area.

He said the community had pounced on some man yet to be identified that accused him of poisoning two men working on his farm.

He, however, didn't reveal the identity of the slain police officer. "The detail is still scanty, but I confirm that we have lost one police officer, who was killed with his gun after it was grabbed from him by a civilian," he said.

Labeja said after the shooting, the unidentified man dropped the gun on the chest of the lifeless body of the police officer and took off.

He explained that no arrest has so far been made since the locals have all fled the scene.
