KAMPALA - According to the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council website, the Arabic word hijab literally means "curtain." When used to refer to dress, it either implies a modest dress that includes a headscarf or refers only to a headscarf.

"Hijab" is often incorrectly used to refer to burqa and niqab. "Hijab" generally refers to a headscarf, "burqa" to attire that covers the entire body including the face, while a "niqab" conceals most of the face, but exposes the eyes.

How one wears the hijab varies according to culture, individual taste, and conviction.

There was a time Muslim attire was predominantly black and unadorned. Today, designers are creating stylish hijab-inspired clothing for the modern Muslim woman.
